My Amherst Floral Rug

The original Pennsylvania "Amhearst Floral" hooked rug by John Filker below...my adaptation above (39.5inches by 28inches on Linen)
I started this rug last summer and I finally completed it this August. It was a real challenge in regards to color planning and I tried my best to stay as close to the original as I possible. I love reproducing antique rugs and this is one of my all time favorites!
Numerous times I yanked out portions and redid them till they felt right...you can see in the above photo of the rug that it is different from the photo of my completed rug...little Jasper did his part in inspecting my work to.
One thing I decided early on was to stretch this rug onto a wooden stretcher frame...a frame like you would put a canvas painting on. I found this pattern so abstract and artsy that it deserved to be treated in a different way. Displaying it like a painting seems to elevate it to a higher level.
I had the wooden stretcher custom made (5mm bigger then the edge of the finished rug to account for stretch of the linen), you also need to order canvas pliers which you use to stretch and pull the edges of the rug over the edge of the wooden bars so you can then staple(staple gun) the fabric to the wooden bar. I also made sure that I laid down acid free Matt Board between the stretcher bars and the rug as the wood will eventually eat away the rug if you don't use a protective layer between them. All in all I am very pleased with how it turned out and I may get the hubby to make me a frame for it one day...although I think it looks nice without one.
If you would like to order this pattern you can go to Black Sheep Wool Designs she has a large selection of antique rug patterns to choose from.

P.S. I am off for a little holiday with the husband...we are Montreal bound and while I am there I want to go to their textile museum and maybe haunt a few antique stores...fun!

Thanks for popping by my friends

Going Batty

My fingers were flying and the sewing machine was humming...four little bats and one big bat came into being...each one full of character and Halloween charm!
Each little Bat is perched on its own wool felt pumpkin which is attached to a distressed black painted wooden thread spool.
The three small bats are 3.5 inches tall with a wingspan of 4.5 inches...the entire piece in total is 7 inches tall.
The big Bat is 5 inches tall with a wingspan of 9 inches...the entire piece is 7 inches in height. He to is sitting on his own wool felt pumpkin with leaves and curly wire vines.
In early October I will put them all up for adoption in my Etsy store.
..its getting to be a real zoo in here...mice, rabbits, bats and cats...whats next?

Hope you are enjoying the beginnings of our fall season...leaves are dropping and my garden is slowly, slowly falling sleep.

Happy Fall

The Old Tin Cup

This old tin measuring cup sat in my cupboard for a very long time...it is a favorite thing of mine and now it has been made even more special...

On top of the cushion are a couple of wool felt pennies and Oak leaves.
A tiny mouse holds the Acorns in his paw...he is a bit fuzzy this time of year as he is growing out his winter coat.

I have given him a woolly scarf to keep the chill away. This little fall themed character will be up for adoption along with many others in my Etsy store come early October.
I also included the little Fry's CoCoa Cup mouse...he too will be needing a warm home for the winter!

Holy Moly two posts in two days...I admit I am rusty at posting and taking photos so I need all the practice I can get!

Sorry for my lack of replying to your comments...its been a real learning curve trying to manage my time between home responsibilities and time away at my new studio...I loves ya all and will try my bestest to pay you a visit when I can...looking forward to getting reaqainted with all of you in blogger land!

I will be posting more photos of new pieces in the next month...lots more to show you!

Till then

CoO cOo FOr CoCoA

The air has a crispness to it and as I walk I am accompanied by the sound of falling leaves and rustling branches.
Chickadees are twittering and I am wary of objects dropping from above. It seems Mr. Squirrel is oblivious to those below as he harvests pine cones to store away for the long winter ahead.
To me Fall is a magic time, a time to hunker down and stay cozy. A time to sit by the fire with a good book and a mug of old fashioned Cocoa...and what would make it even better...a wee friend to share it with.
This little fellow on the vintage Fry's Cocoa cup is part of a large group of new piece that will be available for purchase in my Etsy store come early October.
For the next few weeks I will be previewing my new Fall and Halloween themed pieces here on my blog. If you have any questions regarding these new pieces please feel free to email me...I would love to hear from you!

As a side note...I am really enjoying my new studio away from home...I have been super productive and I have set some lofty goals for myself...happy and content!

Hi Ho, Hi Ho its Back to work I go!
Cheerios, Susan
