Art Crawl 2016

This past weekend the Sunshine Coast where I live put on it's annual Art Crawl...it is a wonderful event where you can tour up and down our coast and visit over a 140 local artist's studios, group shows and galleries. There's a funny saying around these parts that there must be something in the water here that makes people highly creative...as we have one of the highest populations of artists and crafts people in Canada.
It was also a milestone weekend for me as this weekend was the first time ever that I have shown my Mouse Droppings art in a public place...and I have been creating my little characters for almost 14 years(has it been that long...WOW).
My art probably would have stayed out of public view had it not been for Lynn(thanks Lynn), our local rug hooking teacher who kicked my butt and told me to get my *#%$@*! out there and show my stuff!

A lot of folks got pretty emotional while looking at my critters and hooked rugs...they sparked a lot of conversations about the past, even a few teary eyes as they remembered the good old days...but best of all as I huddled behind my rug hooking frame I could watch folks turn the corner and see my work for the first time...they stood there and their faces lite up with these huge grins...they would walk a little closer and soak in the details...picking them up,turning them around. It really made my heart swell and it really brought home that this is why I've been making these things for so long...simply...they make people happy!
I do have to mention that I didn't have anything available for purchase...I decided to have a show and tell instead and I admit that I did this because I was really nervous of how folks would react to my work up here. I'm a hermit, and coming out the creative closet into a public space was a B I G deal for me, limiting my exposure by having less to see was my way of coping with a situation that made me feel uncomfortable.

Well I am pretty damn good at working myself into a nervous tizzy and I obviously completely misjudged folks and by the end of the week-end I was glowing and proud!

and then I realized that...you know what...you don't need people's approval...you are already a good and worthy person...be strong, be proud, have faith in yourself and your abilities and good things will happen.
Thank you to everyone who came out to see me this week-end...and thanks everyone for your patience with this very L O N G post.

Playdate

Over a year ago I ordered some paper-clay to play with...it sat in my closet until I got the urge to do something with it.
I tell ya...it was like I was a kid again...
I loved it! I felt excited...rejuvenated!
As artists we get into creative ruts...the secret was to just let go...be brave...play and go with the flow...

Happy :)

Harvest Moon

There is a chill in the air and the leaves have begun to change...WoW...how many times has that been written...kind of a corny much used sentence opener...but it's the truth non the less.
Fall Fairs are gearing up, farmer's markets are full to the brim with country produce...pumpkins and squash, crisp apples, sugar sweet plums...
Tonight is a Harvest Moon...a full moon to help us celebrate the season...and if you are lucky...and you are out and about...you may glimpse the silhouettes of bats...flitting about.
And maybe, just maybe, you will see something else...a practice flight before the big night!

Enjoy our Harvest Moon

A Mouse Day

My desk is filled to overflowing with critters in all stages of development...they are everywhere...there is no more room to work...they are sitting on shelves, on the floor, in boxes, nooks and crannies. "Cranny" what a strange word now that I think of it!
cran·ny
ˈkranē/
noun
  1. A small, narrow space or opening. Synonyms - Chink, crack, crevice, split, fissure, rift, cleft, opening, gap, aperture, cavity, hole, hollow, niche, corner, nook, interstice.
Holy Cow...who woulda thought one little word could be so many things. Interesting tidbit for the day...onward and forward.
I'm in a bit a panic cause I have signed up to be in our local Art Crawl this October...so I need to get lots of critters ready...it won't be a sale but rather a display of my work. This is something I've never done in all my years of creating these characters...I've shown my paintings and mixed media pieces but not my little characters..it will be fun to see what folks think. I have to say that I am a bit nervous about getting enough pieces completed so that it will be full and interesting...having to create a show is very motivating!
With all this work my back is hunched, my fingers are sore and I am in dire need of massage and a chiropractic adjustment. Meanwhile I will continue to work...I have whole herd of mice that need grooming.

Helloooo out thereeee...

Yup...its me...my last post was in February 2015. Its taken me a long time to get my act together...I am pleased to report that although I am a bit rusty in the creativity department...it seems that making stuff is like riding a bicycle...you never forget!
Fuzz has again started flying...and all of my long forgotten characters are breathing a BIG sigh of relief..."Its a miracle" they have proclaimed..."We will no longer be naked and afraid...we will be painted and given new homes...Hip Hip Hooray!"
It feels pretty good to be stitchin and sewin and dreamin. I have avoided getting busy, avoided the work...but maybe...just maybe there was a benefit to all of this idleness. Some time to breath, to store up creative energy. Some time to reflect and ponder life and what it means to me.

not on fighting the old,
but on building the new"
