Jasper and the Compost Pile

The above photo was taken shortly after Jasper's arrival...he was a whopping three pounds when we got him. Needless to say we have completely fallen in love. He makes us laugh and laugh and unfortunately he makes us cry to...which is part and parcel of being a fur-baby parent.
He now weighs a hefty 9 pounds LOL...and probably won't get much bigger. Unfortunately he lost some of that weight this past week when he decided to make a buffet dinner out of our compost pile.

To make a long story short he poisoned himself and the ensuing Xrays showed a mysterious object lodged in his stomach. Thank goodness it was of an organic nature otherwise he would have needed surgery.
After multiple visits to the vets (((thank God for pet insurance))) which included an overnight stay and lots of (((NOooo not another thermometer up my butt)))numerous pokes, prods, IV's, nausea shots and the like, I am happy to say he has turned the corner and is making a slow recovery. What a nightmare though...a whole week of puppy puking and diarrhea...I felt so sorry for him...I cried my eyes out numerous times thinking the worst was going to happen, but it didn't and now he is getting even more warm blankies to curl up in.
A note to all you fur-baby parents...please, please make sure your compost piles are cleaned up and have some kind of barrier around them. Ours is in a container but a squirrel tunneled under it and managed to spread compost all over the place...this is what Little Jasper got into and managed to eat. I was told by the vet that molds are very toxic to dogs so please keep a close eye on your pup when he is outside as it only takes a second for them to get into trouble.

Hi Susan
I'm a veterinarian and have seen many cases similar to Jasper's. He is one lucky puppy to have recovered! I agree with your comment on pet insurance. It is a wonderful thing!! He's such a cutie-I'm sure he got a ton of love and cuddles while at the vet clinic ☺

Glad to hear that Jasper is OK now. What a scare that must've been! Look at that face...what will he get up to next? ;-)

Enjoy the sunshine, Susan!

Our neighbor had one and I think that our dog got into it, he ended up dying so I learned about not putting out the veggie matter in piles, especially potatoes, they are really toxic to dogs. I usually put piles behind my garden area and the animals eat it up anyways, we have lots of critters that like leftovers.

I sure hope Jasper feels better soon.

I'm happy that Jasper will make a full recovery poor little thing. Lucky that you him to the vet on time.

I keep all my kitchen compost in a black plastic composter with a lid that locks in place. So far I haven't had any critters chewing it and we have lots of squirrels around.

Jasper! Listen to your mommy from now on, and steer clear of the garbage heap! No more compost for you young chap. Oh, it is so difficult being a parent these days, these teeny, tiny children must be watched every minute. I am glad he is okay... that little rascal.

Susan,
I am soooo glad little Jasper will be alright! Gosh he's such an adorable little guy!! We just started a compost bin last summer and fenced it in good because our two fur guys have the run of the fenced in back yard. We have had great concerns about having it and I think this summer we may re locate it somewhere else completely out of range of the dogs! Very scary what you have just been through not to even speak of the expense!
Sending big hugs to you all!!

Hi! I stumbled upon you blog a few days ago and have visited a couple of times admiring your work. I am so sorry about the puppy/compost pile disaster. Puppies are just like kids, it seems, you have to watch them every second

Cute baby! I love him.
My Brussels Griffon, girl. This is the best breed of dog. But they like to poke her nose, which is not necessary.
Dear Jasper, no more pain!

Oh my gosh! I'm sooooo so glad this story looks to be having a happy ending - but yikes, I was right there with you on that roller coaster of h*** with every word in your posting - and know that gosh-awful feeling moment by moment all too well too. Wow oh wow I'm so glad y'all had the good vet support and that Jasper knows now with NOOOOO doubt that he's got people/his angels with him through all this! Sending much love and all the supportive vibes you can stand. Hang in there - much love, Jan

Oh my...why do dogs always eat and party till they puke? ;)
So glad he is doing better. I know how scary that was and how much your heart hurt with worry. Everything will be ok and little party boy won't be getting in any more trouble.
